The Recycling process

Getting rid of an unwanted old piano is difficult these days. It’s too heavy to lift in to your car and it’s too hard to manoeuvre out of the house and over the door steps etc. Your old piano will be put through our full recycling process.

At Piano Disposal UK, we provide a full-service piano disposal and recycling solution across the entire United Kingdom. Whether you’re in England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland, our licensed team makes it easy by collecting your unwanted piano from inside your home — even upstairs or down narrow stairwells — and transporting it safely to our specialist recycling facilities. We understand the logistical challenges of removing heavy instruments, so we handle every detail with care, ensuring smooth, compliant, and fully insured removals.

We are licensed to legally transport and dispose of your piano. We can legally dispose of them in an environmentally friendly way.

We come to your house and we do all the hard work getting the piano out and then take it away to be recycled.

piano recycling - half dismantled

Pianos never go straight to landfill. Once we have collected your piano, we take it back to our warehouse where it is broken down in to its key elements, mainly wood and metal. We even recover the little pieces of lead that are inserted in to the back end of every key.

Once at our depot, every piano is dismantled with precision: wood, metal, lead, and other materials are carefully separated and processed in an eco-friendly way. Our approach means we typically send less than 1 % of each piano to landfill, making us one of the most sustainable piano removal and recycling services in the UK. By recycling the cast-iron frame, wooden casing, and even the small lead weights from the keys, we not only reduce waste but also help conserve natural resources and support the UK’s circular economy.

The recovered wood is taken to a registered waste transfer station where it usually gets recycled in to briquettes or other burnable material. The metal is transported and recycled separately.

We aim to send less than 1% of the piano to landfill, some modern pianos have plastic keys which can’t currently be recycled (but we`re working on that).

Unlike your local authority, we will remove your piano within from your house (upstairs, downstairs, wherever) and unlike your local authority we do give you a date and a approximate time when we will call, meaning you won’t have a piano in your front garden for a few weeks or longer.

Innovative Upcycling Initiatives

Beyond traditional recycling, some organisations are pioneering creative ways to repurpose piano components. For instance, The Piano Shop Bath has launched the ‘Played and Remade’ project, inviting artists to transform discarded piano parts into unique artworks. This initiative not only prevents valuable materials from ending up in landfills but also breathes new life into them, creating pieces that celebrate both music and art.

No matter where you are in the UK, we are committed to providing a transparent, reliable, and environmentally responsible solution. When you choose Piano Disposal UK, you’re choosing a nationwide partner that cares about both your piano and the planet.

Commitment to Sustainability in Piano Disposal

At Piano Disposal UK, we are dedicated to minimising our environmental impact. By ensuring that less than 1% of each piano we collect ends up in landfill, we uphold our commitment to sustainability. Our meticulous recycling process involves separating materials such as wood, metal, and lead components, which are then processed appropriately. This approach not only conserves resources but also supports the circular economy, where materials are reused and repurposed, reducing the need for new raw materials.
