Ethical, sustainable piano disposal

Ethical piano disposal, for a piano you loved

Letting go of a piano that’s been in the family for years is hard. If it truly can’t be saved, we’ll treat it with a bit of care on the way out and make sure it’s recycled responsibly — not crushed into a skip and forgotten.

A much-loved old piano in a family home before ethical disposal
We understand it’s not just furniture

A piano carries a lot of memories

For a lot of people, the piano is where they learned to play as a child, where a parent or grandparent sat every evening, or the centre of family Christmases for decades. When the time finally comes to part with it — a house move, a downsizing, or clearing a loved one’s home — it can feel surprisingly hard.

First, we’ll always ask: can it be saved?

If your piano still has life in it, being recycled isn’t the only option and we’ll say so. Some instruments can be re-homed, donated or restored. We’d always rather see a piano played on than taken apart, and we’ll give you an honest opinion on which category yours falls into.

If it can’t, it’s recycled — not tipped

Many old pianos, sadly, are past the point of economic repair — cracked frames, worn actions, woodworm or damp damage. When that’s the case, ethical disposal means taking the instrument apart properly so the cast-iron frame, timber, strings and felts can be separated and recycled, with only what genuinely can’t be reused sent for disposal.

Handled with respect, start to finish

Our team is used to the fact that this can be an emotional day. We’re calm, careful and unhurried, we’ll answer any questions about what happens next, and we treat the piano with the respect it earned over the years it spent in your home.

Common questions

Ethical piano disposal — your questions

What can I do with an old piano I don’t want to throw away?+

If the piano is beyond saving, ethical disposal means it’s taken apart with care and its materials recycled rather than sent to landfill. We separate the cast-iron frame, timber, strings and felts so as much as possible is recovered. If it can still be played, we’ll tell you and talk through re-homing options first.

Is piano disposal environmentally friendly?+

It can be. Rather than tipping the whole instrument, we strip it down so the metal and timber can be recycled and only the parts that genuinely can’t be reused are disposed of. You can read the detail on our recycling page.

Can you tell me if my piano is worth saving?+

We’ll give you an honest view. Get in touch with any details you have (age, make, condition) and we’ll let you know whether it’s a candidate for re-homing or restoration, or whether recycling is the kindest option.

I just want it gone quickly — is that OK too?+

Of course. If you’d rather keep it simple and fast, our straightforward piano disposal page is for you — same careful recycling, no fuss.
